研究
冠层以前很少为人们所了解，直到最近，科学家们发现了研究冠层的有效方法。然而即使用上现代的研究技术，冠层的许多物种、系统及关系对人们来说仍是神秘的，很多现象仍有待研究与发现.
早期对冠层的研究表现在方方面面，其中包括对树木的砍伐、用鸟枪射击树枝、雇佣土著爬树以及树间架绳索用于爬行.婆罗洲的一位科学家甚至训练一只猴子爬树去获取寄生植物样本.科学家们对这些采集到的成片的冠层进行了仔细的观察，试图一起解开有关冠层的谜底.这个过程是相当困难的，他们仅仅集装了一辆没有任何说明的汽车，带有一个工具箱，任意的金属薄板，还有一些坚果和螺栓，尽管这些东西可能会助他们一臂之力.
在20世纪70年代，科学家们开始运用攀山技术和绳索进入冠层进行长期的监测.这种方法比起以前的任何方法都要成功的多, 但观测的范围被限制在一个小的区域. 另外,绳索攀爬很危险，费用也很大并且已经仅限于用于生态旅游方面.

今天, 人们已经策划出了冠层勘探的详细方法，其中的一些方法明显比其他的更实际、更成功.在1990年，一个气球组成的木排放在了位于西非和法属圭亚那的冠层的上面.科学家能从上面进入冠层并且可以坐在木排上观测. 然而这种方法费用太大并且有可能对森林有破坏作用. 另一种技术,就是利用 工程吊车, 它是由位于巴拿马的史密松宁热带研究所雇用(或者见全球林冠项目).在一些雨林中,冠层走道即可作为一种研究工具又是吸引游客的一种方式，因此它越来越流行.其他一些用于冠层勘探的方法包括使用ultra-lite飞机, 充气汽艇, 有轨电车及遥控滑轮系统等.通常这些项目可以给他们带来来此体验走道的游客数目的增多，但使用过多，危险总是存在.
即使用上现代的研究技术, 冠层的大多数的生物机制，尤其是不同生物间的授粉作用及相互关系，仍不为所知.因此将来森林的研究最大可能仍集中在冠层的研究上.
