雨林多样性的起因和意义 

热带雨林支持着地球上生物的多样性.


尽管它们只占地球表面积的2%,但是它们为这个星球50%的生命提供着住所. 有大量的生物居住在热带雨林中,这个数字估计有5百万到5千万,这几乎是无法想象的. 一连串不同寻常的数字表明我们对这些森林的知识还很欠缺. 举个例子, 尽管温带的森林通常是由半打或者更少的几种树种构成,它们占据了90%的森林树种,但是一个典型的热带雨林一般在一公顷(2.5英亩)上会有超过480种的树种.亚马逊一个单独的灌木丛中生活的蚂蚁种类要比整个不列颠岛生活的还多. 热带雨林的这种多样新并不是一个杂乱的事件,而是一连串唯一的环境造成的结果.

由于热带雨林中新的取食来源、新的隐蔽场所以及新的物种间相互影响的地区的出现,冠层 系统的生物多样性又增加了. 事实上,据估计雨林中大约有70-90%的生命生存在树上.

雨林年的多样性-短期的变化,冰川期,群落交错带
雨林和它的多样性并不是始终不变的,它是受到一系列因素包括大火,树木的枯萎,人类小规模的砍伐和熔岩的流动等影响的产物.这些事件给了新树种在高耸的冠层树之间有生存空间并得以生长的机会,从而增加了雨林的多样性.
